NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2009

On Tuesday evening, November 10th at 7:00pm, the Swampscott Public Library’s Chorover Author Series will present local author Deahn Berrini author of Milkweed. This story is about a young woman coming of age in a New England coastal town while dealing with the post-traumatic stress disorder of her boyfriend who is just home from the Vietnam War. The subject is particularly poignant and timely these days as soldiers return from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ms. Berrini lived in Ipswich and graduated from Ipswich High School in ‘79. She attended Brown University, where she majored in history and met her husband, Russell Leblang, and they both went on to law school, she at Boston College, and he at Harvard. Deahn now lives in Swampscott with her husband and two children.
Her next book is How to Earn Your Keep, a novel about a sister and a brother who mistake the finer material things for the material matters of heart and soul. A jealous polo player, a mother who dresses out of season, a bulldog personal injury lawyer, a bereft family, and a horse trainer round out the story, set in the north of Boston in the late 1990’s. Free tickets for this event will be available at the Reference Desk beginning Monday, October 26th.
The entire family can stop by the library on Monday evening, December 21st at 6:00pm and join in the celebration of the shortest day of the year. There will be a showing of the movie The Polar Express, a craft project, hot chocolate and cider and cookies. Admission is free, but tickets are required for this event. Tickets will be available at the Reference Desk beginning Wednesday, December 9th.
